POKOTABI / Kanda Yabu Soba
神田 やぶそば
At Kanda Yabu Soba in Kanda Awajicho, ease into the meal with sakana plates like ebi fritters or duck saute before sliding into thin seiro soba dipped in sharp, dry broth.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Slide open the door, and the rhythmic cadence of the order callers at the front counter warmly greets you, instantly setting the storied atmosphere before you even sit down. At Kanda Yabu Soba, custom invites you to linger over soba-mae—drinks and small seasonal appetizers taken before the noodles arrive. Cold beer or sake pairs naturally with ten-tane, an aromatic kakiage cluster of Shiba shrimp deep-fried at high heat in rich dark sesame oil. Its toasted fragrance and sweet seafood flavor encourage another sip, complemented by savory duck dishes like aiyaki—duck sautéed with scallions—or tender duck breast simmered gently in the shop's house sauce.
Once you have taken your time with the drinks and savories, the classic conclusion is the signature seiro soba. The slender, faintly green-tinted buckwheat noodles boast a remarkably smooth slide as you slur them down. Dipping just the tips into the taut, sharply dry dipping broth heightens the buckwheat's inherent fragrance. Portions are delightfully light, making it a pleasant luxury to follow up with a warm bowl of duck-scallion nanban soba or a portion enfolded in softly set egg.
The main dining room offers comfortable table seating, while private rooms on the 2nd floor cater to set-course meals, making it a reliable choice for casual lunches as well as more composed evening gatherings.
